It was a night of triumph and recognition for Singapore artistes at the Anugerah Planet Muzik (APM) 2008, a prestigious annual music awards organized by MediaCorp’s radio stations Ria 89.7FM and Warna 94.2FM.

Singapore Idol Taufik Batisah was one of the biggest winners of the night, bagging an impressive total of 3 awards out of 8 nominations – Most Popular Act (Singapore), Most Popular Song (Singapore), and Best Act (Singapore). Asian Idol winner Hady Mirza, Anugerah 2007 winner Aliff Aziz, as well as hip-hop group Sleeq walked away with 1 award each, while local band Cradle won 2 awards – Best Song (Singapore) and Best Album (Singapore).

Regional awards were given to familiar names in the industry - Siti Nurhaliza (Most Popular Female Artiste) and Kris Dayanti (Best Female Artiste), Anuar Zain (Best Male Artiste) and Faizal Tahir who walked away with Most Popular Male Artiste and Best New Male Artiste.

Zakiah Halim, Vice President (Malay, Indian and Community Programming), MediaCorp Radio and Executive Producer of APM 2008, says, “Anugerah Planet Muzik Awards presents an invaluable opportunity for composers, lyricists and artistes, to extend their musical influence to a regional audience and enrich the industry in general. This leads to both a bigger market for performers as well as more choice and quality music for the listeners.”

Into its eighth year, APM 2008 was shown ‘live’ by Astro Ria in Malaysia and Brunei, and by Global TV in Indonesia. Radio stations Ria 89.7FM, Warna 94.2FM and Malaysia’s Era also carried the event ‘live’ on air. 3,500 supporters were treated to engaging performances by Siti Nurhaliza, Anuar Zain, Mawi, Faizal Tahir, Kris Dayanti, Bunga Citra Lestari, Hady Mirza and Taufik Batisah who wowed audiences with his back flip dance routine.

Hailed as the region’s answer to the Grammy awards, APM 2008 demonstrated the high standards of the Malay music industry, catapulting talents onto a regional and international stage. Besides 17 regional and local award categories, APM 2008 also presented two special awards – the Anugerah Planet Music Special Award to Malaysia’s pioneer rock band Search for their life-time achievements in Malay pop music, as well as the Anugerah Planet Music Love Award to Malaysian sibling band KRU for introducing innovative technology in the music industry while raising funds for charity.
