Taufik’s new album Suria Hatiku review

The “soft” launch of new albums by two happening homies – actress-singer Rui En and the first Singapore Idol Taufik Batisah, who are label mates on Hype Records – drew lines of autograph hunters at the Suntec Convention Hall last weekend. It’s as if, momentarily, the bad times were in abeyance, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
While both albums produced by local production veteran and Singapore Idol judge Ken Lim, are exemplary in quality, Suria Hatiku (roughly translated as My Sunny Heart) is probably bolder and more inventive than United States.
Perhaps it has to do with Lim giving Taufik a freer hand to shape the sound and songs on his second Malay album, and the singer amply shows his mettle as composer, arranger and producer.
The opening cut Gadis Itu (That Girl) is a Latin-sounding scorcher built on breakbeats and paving the way for greater success in Malaysia (and maybe Indonesia, too) are KepadaNya (To You), his much-touted duet with fellow Singapore Idol Hady Mirza, and Hey and Citra Suria (Sunny Image) contributions from Singapore –born Malaysian music giant M. Nasir.
