Composers And Authors Society Of Singapore (Compass) Awards
POP singer and songwriter JJ Lin was a big winner at the 14th annual Composers and Authors Society of Singapore (Compass) Awards Presentations last night.
The 28-year-old swept three awards at the ceremony, which honours those in the music scene here. It was held at the Raffles City Convention Centre.
Lin clinched one of the biggest prizes, the Top Local Artiste of the Year award, which is given out to Singaporean artistes who generated the highest royalty earnings for the year.
Singer Stefanie Sun took home last year's award.
Lin also took the Top Local Songwriter of the Year award, his second win in a row for this category, as well as the Top Local Soundtrack award for his tune in the 2007 animated movie Legend Of The Sea.
To Lin, winning is a 'morale booster' which pushes him to do more, the Taiwan-based singer told my paper in a phone interview before the awards show.
He added: 'I hope that whatever award I get will encourage other musicians to keep pushing on and promoting original music.'
The first Singapore Idol winner, Taufik Batisah, also struck gold. He walked away with the award for Top Local Malay Pop Song for his love song, Usah Lepaskan, from his 2006 album All Because Of You.
The 27-year-old pop singer, who has four albums under his belt, said: 'Awards are a sign of maturity for your musicality. I'm really happy because it means I'm doing something right.'
It was the first time Taufik had won a Compass award.
Renowned singer and songwriter Dick Lee, 52, received the Wings of Excellence Award, which is handed out to Singaporean artistes who have made their mark in the region.
He also nabbed the award for Top Local English Pop Song for his song, Prisoner Of Love.
