‘The show must go on’
Regional stars pull out the stops despite terror threat
ONLY two days after the terrorist bombings at the Ritz Carlton and Marriott hotels in Jakarta, Indonesia, the region's top music stars gathered at the Jakarta Convention Centre for the Anugerah Planet Muzik Awards 2009.
Co-organised by Beyond DDB, Global TV and MediaCorp, the show went ahead as planned.
And despite the tension in the air, Singaporean singer Taufik Batisah, who won the Most Popular Singapore Artiste award, said that the mood at the convention centre was anything but down.
"We were sad about the bombings, but they always say the show must go on, so I think all the artistes made sure that we gave 110 per cent," he told Today.
The awards ceremony was hosted by Aura Shai from Singapore, Nirina Zubir from Indonesia and Aznil from Malaysia.
The hosts and artistes paid tribute to the victims of the terror attacks, but encouraged the audience not to be disheartened by such acts.
When contacted on Friday, Zakiah Halim, VP, Malay, Indian and Expat Programming at MediaCorp, said: "We felt that we should not allow incidents like that to affect the other aspects of our life. The people who did the bombings - the terrorists - they want attention and we are already giving them attention. But we need to continue with what we're doing and get on with life."
APM is the only regional Malay music awards of its scale and this was the first time it was held in Jakarta.
Since its inception in 2001, it has usually been held either in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.
"Hopefully, the next awards in Jakarta won't be as dramatic," said Taufik.
